Animal Testing and Skin Care Products – What You Should Know

July 23, 2010 - 5:58 pm No Comments

We all like beautiful skin don’t we? At what cost are you willing to have it? Animal testing is a controversial issue. Why is it necessary? Some say it is to ensure safety. Cosmetic and skin care products are tested before consumers buy and use it. Animal testing can include exposing animals to different substances to see if irritations develop. This may mean skin irritations, eye tearing or to see if the animals get sick.

Testing for drugs and pharmaceuticals is even more stringent and severe. Test animals are exposed to diseases and then treated to see how the ‘new’ drug performs. This includes the treatment and side effects. Also animals are examined after the treatment to record any internal cure or damage.

Are there other methods of testing besides testing on animals? YES! Some companies, have long established reliable, non-animal testing methods. These alternatives are permitted for cosmetic companies. Do your research and find out where to find them.

If there are reliable methods of testing without cruelty to animals then why aren’t companies using them? Some businesses are concerned about their financial situations and maintaining jobs. Others are protecting themselves against liability.

If you buy products that test on animals, you are responsible for promoting that company. Use your prerogative to promote animal friendly products. There are various sites that list ‘animal friendly’ cosmetic companies. Testing on animals is cruel and unacceptable. Use your purchasing power, you as a consumer can send a message to companies that test on animals.

Can Dogs Eat Nuts?

July 22, 2010 - 8:01 pm No Comments

Can my dog eat nuts or peanuts? Is it okay for my puppy or dog to have peanut butter? Why do you think we ask these questions? As American children most of us were raised on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. These are foods that we humans love to snack on.

As we enter adult hood and even into our senior years our peanut butter sandwiches continue to be great. What is one of the first foods that we introduce to our puppy? We share a tear-off of our peanut butter sandwich or we take a swipe of peanut butter from the jar and feed it to our pet. The first time I gave my dog some peanut butter I thought it was funny because the peanut butter got caught on the upper palette of his mouth and he went through such physical distortions to lick it with his tongue. It was very funny watching the clownish antics.

And I am sure you have discovered that dogs have a sweet tooth and your pet wants more peanut butter. Stop, and think a moment. Peanuts in a very small quantity will not hurt your canine friend. Repeating it too often increasing the serving can be the problem.

Peanuts are very high in protein; however, these are the concerns:

How much salt? – Cardiac problems could arise. How much sugar? – Diabetes may be a problem. How much fat? – Weight gain brings medical problems. What are the chances that your puppy may choke on one of these peanuts?

Nuts like peanuts should be given to our pet dogs very sparingly. I hear of people feeding their pets cashews and pecans. No problems occur in small amounts. My dog loves cashews. In my opinion the hazard of giving nuts to our four legged friends is to forget or without thinking about it give them nuts that are dangerous or deadly to them. Have you noticed how you can be watching your favorite program on television and get so engrossed in your program that you ate the whole can of nuts?

You would feel very bad if your caused your puppy or your dog great harm. The two nuts that are on the danger list for canines are:

Macadamia nuts Walnuts

Dogs can eat just about everything that humans eat. Similar to us they can have allergic or negative reactions. They many have an upset stomach resulting in cramping, diarrhea, and constipation or other symptoms considered as allergies.
