What’s the deal with deworming?

Worm infestation in cats and dogs can not only cause irritation, discomfort and pain, but may also lead to distress and poor health. Before you start treating the problem, it’s important to know which type of worm is troubling your pet. There are two types of worms:

Roundworms

With the ability to pass from pet to pet (and pet to human), roundworms look similar to earthworms yet appear much thinner and can grow to anything from half an inch up to several inches long. Roundworms are sometimes vomited but are mostly passed through faecal matter. Although pets can pass worm infections, some puppies and kittens are infected from the moment they are born. If your pet has a roundworm infestation there are several products on the market that relieve the irritation and discomfort easily and quickly.

Tapeworms

Slightly different than roundworms, tapeworms are made up of segments and when mature they separate and can be seen in the coat or faecal matter. Once separated, tapeworms resemble grains of rice. Generally speaking, tapeworms are not present in puppies and kittens but can develop as the pet matures.

As mentioned earlier, there is a range of products designed to tackle the problematic infestation. A prime example is Drontal, one of the leading non-medicated product lines formulated to remove the infestation in a quick and easy application, making them pet friendly.

Plus Flavour for Dogs comes in tablet form which is easy to digest and can be fed directly to your dog or puppy, or be disguised in food for easy application. Likewise, Cat XL comes in a pack of small tablets for your cat, for speedy removal of roundworm and tapeworm infestation.

Fundraiser set to happen for Larry the Downing Street pet cat

October 4, 2011 - 12:25 pm No Comments

A unique quiz evening is going to take place to raise funds for the care of 10 Downing Street’s Official Mouser, Larry.
The cost of looking after Larry has, until now been paid for by David Cameron’s staff, after he was announced a community moggy who belongs to Downing Street, instead of a family pet or an expense to the taxpayer.
The fund raising evening is going to take place in the State Rooms at Number 10, to raise funds for the cost of Larry’s food and also cat supplies, and definitely will have a unique cat themed quiz round.
Larry was brought in to trap mice and rats at the PM’s property, after a number of rodents had been noticed scuttling in the shadows of live news reports. He came from Battersea Cats and dogs Home, and although it took him a little while to land his very first catch, he’s now settled into life at the legendary property.
He’s also rumoured to have found himself a special female cat, because he has been seen spending time with Maisy who actually lives within the keeper’s cottage in St James’ Park! Larry has long been neutered, so there will certainly not be any kittens.
A spokesperson for the Royal Parks said: “The Park Manager confirms that Larry does make trips to visit Maisy. The two appear to be content with each other’s company, sometimes enjoying meals together.”
